Is Mac Really Better For Web Development?

One of the biggest debates raging through members of the web development community is whether it is better to use a Mac or whether you should stick with your PC. There are, of course, many arguments in support of each of these decisions, but the fierceness of the debate has caused many people to begin questioning whether they have made the right decision. Whilst Mac appears to be winning the debate at the moment, you must ask yourself whether it really is better.

Pros

Anyone that uses a Mac for their web development work will be able to write you a list of all the things that they love about it:

Preinstalled Languages - Many people find that having many of the languages that they use every day (including Ruby, Python, Pearl and Java) already installed makes their lives easier. Drives on Desktop - The fact that any drives you have plugged into your Mac (like a CD-ROM or a USB) appear instantly on the desktop makes it much easier to navigate. Time Machine - If you hated doing backups and restores on your PC, you'll love doing them on your Mac. The Time Machine program is favoured because it works effortlessly every time.

Cons

If you were to push really hard, it's likely that anyone who uses a Mac for their web development work will also have a number of gripes about it:

USB Ports - At times, developers will need to have a number of additional items plugged into their computers. Unfortunately, Macs seem to feature far less USB ports than PC's, making this goal difficult to achieve. Keyboard Shortcuts - Whilst simply pressing 'enter' on a PC will open a file and pressing 'home' will bring your cursor to the front of the current line, doing this on a Mac requires a far more complex process. Trash - Once you have sent an unwanted item to the Trash bin, you cannot actually go in and permanently remove individual files - you must permanently empty the entire Trash bin or leave it all in limbo.

Whilst there are a number of pros and cons surrounding the choice of a Mac for web development work, it is important to remember that you will find the same issue when comparing a PC. So, which one is better? Essentially, the answer to this question lies with you - are you currently using a Mac for your job in web development and loving it, or are you still using your trusty old PC and can't imagine changing for anyone?
